The game features 12 ghost types, with unique abilities and detection methods. Either way, your goal is to enter the place, track the spirit, and get proof of its existence. There are two game modes, single-player and a co-op version, which resembles the teamwork found in games like GTFO. You take on a ghost hunter’s role, accepting jobs in various locations, from populated suburbs to isolated cabins and abandoned asylums.
It has plenty of tricky optional collectibles, too.Like Dead by Deadlight, Phasmophobia is an asymmetrical game, but it has a slightly different shake on the genre.
The platforming, swinging, and jet-boosting traversal is a lot of fun, and I particularly like the sense of progression as you power up your suit. This game is best played in (online-only) co-op, but if you’re looking for a solo trip, you won’t be disappointed. It’s clever, creepy, and already surprisingly polished, and I can’t wait to see where it goes from here. And while the symptoms of its early access state may be keenly felt where breadth of content is concerned there is no shortage of depth in GTFO. Its six enjoyably terrifying expeditions are creative and surprising enough to overlook the otherwise-plain lack of variety in its environment, enemies, and objectives. Its stealth action is well thought-out and presents a lot of excellent opportunities for fun coordination with your squad. While a horde of zombie-like sleepers rushing mindlessly towards four men with guns may look familiar, GTFO’s early access version is anything but more of the same for the co-op shooter genre.
